Acute Care Psychiatry Unit Health Sciences Centre

What we do

The acute care psychiatry unit is a teaching hospital psychiatric unit located at the Health Science Centre. We promote a recovery model approach to patient care and offer an interdisciplinary approach towards assessment and treatment of mental health problems or mental illness during the acute phase. The unit provides interdisciplinary assessment, acute intervention and follow-up. Close linkages are maintained with community.

Patient expectations

Inpatients are encouraged to participate in groups that are available on the unit, to participate in therapeutic events offered both on and off the unit, to participate in visiting hours while in hospital, to particiapate in visits with other individuals on the unit in the main lounge and to use crafts, books and magazines found on the unit.

Unit Setting

Rooms are mostly four-bed ward rooms, with the exception of a couple of private bedrooms, which are assigned based on individual needs.

We ask that individuals respect the privacy of others in the unit.
