Geriatric Psychiatry Assessment Unit
What we do
This is an inpatient unit to serve clients over the age of 65 who require assessment, treatment, and diagnoses for a new onset of a psychiatric illness or new onset of cognitive decline. The unit also provides assessment and treatment for clients of any age who have a diagnosed dementia with challenging psychiatric or behavioral symptoms. This unit is sometimes referred to as the East 2A.

How to access this service
Clients can be admitted to East 2A in the following ways:
- Via Waterford hospital’s emergency room (psychiatric assessment unit)
- Direct admission via psychiatrist outpatient clinics
- Referrals completed by outpatient psychiatrist, family doctor, or nurse practitioner are sent to the geriatric psychiatry referral coordinator. Clients requiring inpatient stay will be placed on a waitlist for East 2A admission. The average wait times is two to three weeks.
